Lent will be here in approximately 5 seconds (aka 2 days) so it’s time for me to start figuring out what to give up and such. Every year I say I’m going to go all out and be a super Catholic and “do Lent right” and within 2 weeks I’m struggling with my lack of the 248394 other I’ve decided I should give up to make me a better person. So this year I’m going to try to do Lent with a little perspective. I don’t think the point is to be grumpy for all of Lent because I gave up everything that brings me joy and happiness…
Usually I try to give up something and do something good throughout Lent. I already know that I want to give up using the computer, phone, and TV after 9 pm. I waste so much time at night reading stupid websites or getting sucked into some TV show. And while 9 pm seems like it shouldn’t be that hard, we don’t get done with Damian’s bedtime routine and our dinner until about 8:30. So that leaves me all of 30 minutes to make sure the world didn’t explode before turning off the computer and doing something more productive with my time.
As far as what I want to do for Lent, I haven’t really decided yet. I’m hoping by the pure fact I won’t be wasting a ton of my evening on the computer or watching TV will encourage me to do more reading. I’d like to find some good books on the faith. I would also like to go to daily Mass more. I take Damian with me in the evening occasionally, but it all depends on his mood. Damian at Mass is always an experience, but even more so when it’s held in a small chapel with only 15 other people… So we’ll see what I end up with.
What is everyone else doing for Lent? Any good book suggestions for me?
